This nuance isn’t often explained in workbooks or app courses, so I thought I’d share a quick grammatical tidbit.

Ce is used before any form of the verb être.

• C’est, Ce sont, C’était, Ce sera, Ce serait…
  

Ça is used before all other verbs.

• Ça va, Ç’allait, Ça marche, Ça intéresse…
  

I should also mention that ça can be used with être, but only when there is a pronoun object (me, te, lui, y, en, etc…) in front of the verb.

• Ça m’est égal, Ça y est, Ça t’est arrivé…
